The ambient cancellation is effective; I tested them by running my shop dust collection system which runs about 86 dB at 3 feet — the phones cancelled out all but the highest pitch whine.

They sure do. The "ANC" stands for "Active Noise Cancelling". The headphones have sophisticated technology to cancel ambient noise, making them ideal for focusing in any kind of noisy situation.
Basically, the exterior of the right ear-cup is a control surface. You can control volume, track, play/pause, and more with a swipe and a tap. Don't worry, you'll love it.
